TO MY MOTHER

To-day’s your natal day,
Sweet flowers I bring;
Mother, accept, I pray,
My offering.
And may you happy live,
And long us bless;
Receiving as you give
Great happiness.

And so wrote Christina Rossetti  at age 11 in 1842, her first poem ever written.  Although it appears to be a birthday poem, it is a sweet and fitting tribute for Mother's Day.  Here in the United States Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1908.  After holding a memorial for her mother in Grafton, West Virginia, Anna Jarvis began a campaign to make Mother's Day a recognized holiday.  By 1914, it was adopted in the U.S.   It is a time to lavish and honor mothers for their loving child-rearing as well as their other strengths and accomplishments.
